Reading Assignment:

Chapter 3: Classical Greek Civilization (Hellenic), pages 75-91 (through Theater: Tragedy)

Chapter 4: Classical Greek Civilization (Hellenistic), pages 93-116

Knowledge Points and Class Preparation:

Learn the “key cultural terms” at the end of the chapter.

· Describe the unique features of Hellenic & Hellenistic Greek politics, religion, art, architecture and literature.

· Name the three Hellenic & Hellenistic Greek philosophers and describe their philosophies.

· Describe the evolution of the elements of Greek temples.

· Recognize the difference between Hellenic and Hellenistic art.

· Identify the key elements of Greek Comedy and the key works of the comic authors described in the text.

I am aware that some of you have not received your book yet. Please complete the appropriate assignment:

For those with your books:

Chose one of the following: philosophy, literature (including theater), sculpture, or architecture. Send me a paragraph with 3-5 sentences explaining how your chosen category developed and changed between the Archaic, Hellenic, and Hellenistic periods.

For those without your books:

Watch the Disney cartoon I mentioned in class, Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land. You can find it at http://www.youtube.com/user/thelostdisney. Send me a paragraph with 3-5 sentences explaining how and why the Greeks incorporated mathematics into their humanities.
