Download and read the full syllabus.

Read Introduction and “A Humanities Primer”, pages xvii-xxxi

 

Knowledge Points and Class Preparation:

 

Learn the vocabulary in bold throughout the chapter.

 

Be able to identify the various approaches and analytical methods mentioned.

 

Assignment Details:

1.      Send me an e-mail at my temporary address (Priscilla@mythicthinking.org) stating the following information:

·         You have read and received the syllabus.

·         Your preferred contact information, including nicknames, e-mail address, and phone number, in case I need to get in touch with you during the semester.

 

2.      In this e-mail, please include a short paragraph stating which of the arts mentioned in the “Humanities Primer” section interest you the most and why.

3.      Make sure the subject of the e-mail reads “Assignment #1.A.” Please do not send attachments.

Reading Assignment:

 

Chapter 1: Prehistory and Near Eastern Civilizations, pages 1-33

 

Knowledge Points and Class Preparation:

 

Learn the “key cultural terms” at the end of the chapter.

 

·         Describe the unique features of Neolithic, Mesopotamian, and Egyptian technology, religion, art, architecture and literature.

 

Assignment Details:

 

1.      Send me a separate e-mail at my temporary address (Priscilla@mythicthinking.org) with at least one paragraph (4-6 sentences) answering the following question:

In this chapter, we looked at remaining legacies of these early civilizations, from early science and technology, religion, writing, and various art and architecture. What would you consider to be the #1 legacy of these early civilizations and why?

2.      Make sure the subject of the e-mail reads “Assignment #1.B.” Please do not send attachments.

 

Point value: 10 points, graded on completion of the assignment.
